REVIEW: Lawrence Maxwell’s “Got U Home”

Calling the province of PEI home is alt-country singer/songwriter Lawrence Maxwell. In June of last year, he released his single, “Got U Home”– a song that tells the story of an ephemeral, summer love led by lust. Prior to releasing the nostalgic track, he played it for the audience at St. Paul’s Church in Charlottetown, as part of Music PEI’s Songwriter of the Year concert. As he shares in a press release,

“I wanted to showcase this song in a listening environment,” says Maxwell. “That’s the best way to see if a song has legs- when you strip it down to just you and the guitar, and the essence has to come through without any bells and whistles” (Maxwell).

The audience’s positive reception of the track was all the confirmation he needed to get his band together to record it.

“Got U Home” was written by Maxwell, produced/recorded by Adam Gallant of The Hill Sound Studio and mixed/mastered by John McLaggan of Parachute Mastering. Lyrically, the track is true to Maxwell’s signature carefree storytelling, poeticism and keen sense of humour. You have two lovers who met by chance at a pool table, whose desires and deep need to feel seen led to a series of shortsighted choices, such as ‘Hotboxing in her father’s Mercedes together’ (Maxwell)You can also hear the East Coast influences through the instrumental arrangement within the track, further adding to its charm.

THE VERDICT

Overall, “Got U Home” is a short & sweet track that fits its niche well. If you’re looking to expand your arsenal of East Coast music and update your summer playlists, then I recommend checking the song out.
