REVIEW: Lauren Watkins’ “Mama, I Made It”

Big Loud x Songs & Daughters’ own Lauren Watkins is following up her collaboration with Graham Barham on the hit track, “STRAIGHT TO MY HEART” with her brand-new single, “Mama, I Made It”. Sharing on her socials on the May 3rd release date, “I’ve been dying for y’all to hear this one,” Adding, “Hope ya love it” (Watkins, PR team).

Within the track, Watkins sings of the messy aftermath of a love story gone awry. Emotions high, destruction ensues across the trailer park home she once shared with her former partner.

Written by Rocky Block, Lauren Hungate and Watkins herself, the track clearly demonstrates the strength of the songwriters in the room through the little touches and details used to set the scene and bring reality to it. Three standout lines that demonstrate this being, “Aimed for a nerve and damn, I hit it” (0:45-0:47), “Too much Makers made a mark” (0:53-0:55) and “He’s sure to make my goodbye grapevine famous” (1:01-1:04). Each of these lines make specifications that add depth to story and are memorable to listeners.

As for the song’s production, Watkins teamed up once again with Joey Moi. Sonically, the tune is on brand for her and matches her last EP, Introducing: The Heartbreak. It’s neo-traditional meets contemporary country, with clear influences from the 90s country music the singer/songwriter grew up listening to. Overall, it’s just the type of song you’d expect from Watkins at this point in terms of vocal delivery, lyrically and sonically.

The single also comes in advance of her full-length album, which is set for release this summer. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for what’s to come.
