INTERVIEW: Nashville’s Own “Street Cowboy” Hunter Jordan Discusses Upcoming Single, “Something To Pray About,” Solo Project and Touring with HARDY

Calling Nashville, TN home is the music industry's own "Street Cowboy", Hunter Jordan.

Faith, family, friendship, personal growth and authenticity are all core pillars for this country artist, songwriter and performer.

Earlier this year, Hunter kicked off his solo project with the release of “Dark”. Within the first weekend, the track was featured on UPstar Music’s “New Music Friday” playlist and gained over 40K digital streams on Spotify alone (with over 100K digital streams on Spotify at the time of writing). As a songwriter, he’s written numerous tracks with some of Music City’s finest songwriters including Erik Dylan, Reid Isbell and CJ Solar. As a performer, Hunter has been a direct opener on tour with Big Loud’s own hitmaker HARDY. He’s also opened for other notable country stars, including Riley Green and Mitchell Tenpenny.

On May 10th, the rising indie artist is set to release his follow-up single, “Something To Pray About”. Arriving just in time for Mother’s Day, the track explores the bond of brotherhood and the prayers moms say as they worry about the hell their sons have been raising. As he shares,

“I wrote this one with Dominic Warren and Dillon Keith- we were kicking around an idea like songwriters do”. He continues, “It’s about brothers. Whether you’re related or going out with your friends who are like brothers, the song is about that type of relationship and your moms who worry about you while you are out raising hell.(Jordan).

Evidently, the upcoming single is perfectly on brand for him, as it encompasses faith, family and friendship all in one.

“Something To Pray About” directly follows up the success of his debut solo release “Dark”. Speaking more about if hopes to replicate those results with his new single and his expectations for it, he shares,

“Obviously, I would love to see that success repeated. Starting over was scary and ‘Dark’ getting off the ground was a blessing. However, I’m not putting as much pressure on myself for this one” (Jordan).

Ahead of the May 10th release date, Hunter has been teasing the song on his socials. Speaking about the growing anticipation surrounding the upcoming track and what he hopes fans take away from it, he shares,

“I’m close with my mom–There’s a part at the end of the song where my mom reads our favourite bible verse”. He continues, “‘Something To Pray About’ really demonstrates who I am–fans will see that”. Adding, “Mothers have commented on the song already, sharing their stories and how they relate to it. Even mothers with daughters who raised hell have been sharing their stories.(Jordan).

As the title suggests, “Something To Pray About” also makes a nod toward religious faith. Speaking about the importance faith holds for him, he shares,

“Basically, that is a claim I make that helps me in my day-to-day life”. Adding, “This song is special- my faith is important to me. Now I have a project that shows that side of me, maybe for the first time” (Jordan).

In some of his future songs, the message of faith is something Hunter plans on sharing via his music. He states, “Not in every song, but if it makes sense” (Jordan). Also an in-demand co-writer, Hunter has written with numerous high-profile songwriters in Nashville, such as Erik Dylan, Reid Isbell and CJ Solar. If he could co-write with one notable songwriter he hasn’t already, it would be Jordan Walker. He also previously stated that one of his goals is to have a cut with a major label artist, sharing that he hopes he gets one with Jameson Rodgers. Speaking more on the topic, he shares,

“As for a songwriter, one that’s been on my list that I really like- Jordan Walker, who is half of Walker McGuire. He’s co-written ‘When It Rains It Pours’ for Luke Combs. I think we’d get some really cool stuff written together.” He continues, “One artist I really like a lot is Jameson Rodgers. I think he’s underrated. He’s one of my favourites” (Jordan).

“Something To Pray About” is Hunter’s second single since embarking on his solo project. Speaking about how the experience has been for him so far, he shares,

“I am pleasantly surprised with they way things are going in terms of streaming growth and social media growth. I feel so fulfilled with getting things going”. He adds, “‘Something To Pray About’ is one of the most genuine singles I’m releasing to date.” (Jordan).

Further elaborating on his vision for his solo project and what type of music he plans on releasing in the future, he shares,

“I like and listen to a variety of music. With ‘Something To Pray About,’ I went with a more contemporary sound”. He continues, “I also plan on having Hip-Hop and rock-infused songs. I’ll also have some acoustic releases and deeper cut type stuff”. Adding, “Fans can expect diverse releases” (Jordan).

Hunter has previously toured across the United States as a direct opener for notable country acts such as HARDY, Riley Green and Mitchell Tenpenny. Speaking more about those experiences and what they have meant for him, he shares,

“What hit the hardest, was opening for HARDY. He’s a huge influence of mine – Opening for him took it to a bit of a different level. We had a show where I went to college. So I had some fans and friends there– It was a really engaged crowd”. Adding, “It’s all proof that I’m on the right track” (Jordan).

Hunter also plans to headline his own cross-country US tour once he releases more singles under his solo project– making his previous touring experience advantageous to him. Speaking more about that and how he learns from his fellow artists, he shares,

“No matter how big or how small the crowd, I can’t turn my brain off of studying the artists. Whether I’m out on tour or at a concert, I like to ask myself questions such as, ‘What are they doing that drew me in as fan?’ Then implement some of what I learned in my show”. Adding, “Each time I do that, I get closer to what I really want to do when I eventually headline a tour of my own” (Jordan).

This May, Hunter is set to play several Upstate New York shows. Mentioning,

“Upstate New York has become like a second home. I still can’t wrap my mind around how this far from home there are people who genuinely care about what I do and my music” (Jordan).

Looking forward to sharing the new tracks with New York audiences, he shares,

“I have a loyal fanbase there, so I am excited to try out these new ones. I try to get out there more than once a year, so I can still be involved in that [fan] community” (Jordan).

For fans who have never been to one of Hunter’s live shows, he gave us a glimpse into what they can expect. Sharing,

“What you can expect at my live show, besides my originals, is that I have cover songs mixed into the set. I like to throw curveballs – do things that people may not have expected me to do”. I play everything from classic rock to a rap songs(Jordan).
