Q & A: Megan Dawson Shows Listeners What it’s Like “To Fall In Love” With Who You Are in Her Latest Single

Canadian pop-country artist Megan Dawson is back with her brand-new single, “To Fall in Love”. Written by Chelsea Heaslip, Hannah Gazso and Megan herself, the pop-country tune illustrates the beauty of falling in love with yourself before you fall for someone else.

Recently, I spoke with Megan about her latest single and more.

Kyla Pearson: To kick off the new year, you released your brand-new single, “To Fall in Love”. Can you tell us more about the song?

Megan Dawson: My co-writers and I wrote this song over a Facetime call a couple of years ago. The concept of how love changes so much over time in your life and how it can feel so obvious and clear to you when you find the love that you’ve been waiting for, sometimes it just comes at the most random time.

In addition, this song has really turned into the idea that even when you take the time to build your relationship with yourself and find what makes you happy…falling in love with yourself first can help give clarity on what love means to you in a person. I have always thought the idea of self-love taking the driver’s seat is definitely a big factor behind this song.

Kyla Pearson: The song was produced by Dan Swinimer and co-written by you, Chelsea Heaslip and Hannah Gazso. Can you tell us a bit more about the process that went into writing the song? Did it all come together right away or was this a song that took a few writes?

Megan Dawson: I brought the concept to Chelsea and Hannah after writing the concept down as if it were a poem while I was walking on the treadmill oddly enough. I was thinking about the questions you ask yourself when you think you might be falling in love with someone and how there’s so much reflection that goes into it. It can feel a bit dramatic, but that’s what makes it so special and beautiful.

We wrote the song in about 45 minutes and it was initially written as a ballad. The lyrics and melody came quite quickly and the song felt pretty complete very early on. When I brought this song to my producer, Dan Swinimer, he had the idea of making an upbeat version of the song. He sent me a demo with this in mind and I fell in love with the song all over again!

Kyla Pearson: In terms of sound, this song differs from your previous releases, “Kissed Me Like That” and “Influence”. Would you say this song is beginning of a new direction for you within the pop-country genre?

Megan Dawson: I would say it’s almost like another branch of my pop-country style! I knew that with these three songs, I wanted them to have their own identity and style, but still fit within the music I love sharing with my audience.

I always want to release music people can find themselves in. I think what is fun about this song is that it has such a dramatic, hopeful and almost cinematic style which I feel reflects the feelings of falling in love. I like to think of it as the three songs I have most recently released all differ from each other, but still support the same vision of a pop-country bop.

Kyla Pearson: According to you, what is the ideal setting for fans to listen to the song?

Megan Dawson: I personally always found this to be a great song to blast in my earphones when I am at home, doing chores or cooking–Singing along like I am in a stadium filled with thousands of people! Or definitely in the car to give a mood boost at any point in the day.

Kyla Pearson: The 12th Annual Country Music Alberta Awrds are around the corner. You’ve been considered for 4 different awards, including: “Horizon Female Artist of The Year”, “Horizon Single of The Year: “Influence”, Video of the Year: “ Kissed Me Like That” and “Songwriter of The Year: Good For You- Flaysher”. What have these considerations meant to you as an artist? Where can industry members go to vote for you?

Megan Dawson: It means the world! The Country Music Alberta community has been a part of my journey from very early on. It is also how I have met some of my closest friends and collaborators. So to be recognized for these projects among so many amazing and talented artists in our community, I feel so grateful!

Kyla Pearson: Lastly, do you have any upcoming shows where fans can hear you play “To Fall in Love” live?

Megan Dawson: Stay tuned to my website for show updates where we can belt “To Fall in Love” together, as well as stay tuned to socials for more fun content surrounding the song.
