Q & A: Leroy And Leroy on Their Path to Internet Stardom, Finding Things to do in Alberta & Their Next Destination

In 2020, best friends Leroy And Leroy gained internet stardom thanks to their lighthearted, comedic Tik Tok videos that demonstrate “There’s Always Something to Do”. Embarking on adventures across the country, the duo hailing from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan combat boredom while shedding light on quirky Canadian culture gems such as seemingly nonsensical street signs, peculiar roadside tourists attractions and unusual art installations.

Recently, I spoke with Leroy And Leroy about their path to internet stardom, finding things to do in Alberta, their next destination and more.

Kyla Pearson: For those who are unfamiliar with your videos, they highlight through a comedic lens, some of the quirks and gems in Canadian culture (Particularly in Saskatchewan)– from streetside art installations to nonsensical road signs. Can you tell us a bit about how you started making these videos? What made you want to focus particularly on this?

Leroy & Leroy: Like any good Canadian story, this one starts in a hockey rink. We had been friends for years, and talked about making some sort of goofy videos, then one night while we were both working at a Moose Jaw Warriors game, inspiration struck. We heard someone say “There’s nothing to do” and quickly responded “There’s Always Something to Do” and with that, the beginning of Leroy and Leroy was born – Even if it didn’t have a name yet!

Kyla Pearson: A core message you spread through your videos is finding the best in any situation and that “There’s Always Something to Do”. How do you feel this message has had a positive impact on your Canadian viewers during the height of Covid-19 pandemic when many were faced with shutdowns and restrictions and now had all this extra time on their hands?

Leroy & Leroy: We don’t purposely set out thinking that our videos are going to have an impact on people’s lives. However, humour and laughing are important and we think that having a laugh every day is better than not having a laugh. For Leroy, the glass is always half full and his optimistic outlook is contagious. It’s fun putting him in situations that most people would find annoying or irritating and just seeing how he responds in a positive way.

Ultimately we think that if we can make people laugh, then at that moment they can forget about whatever else is going on. Laughter is powerful!

Kyla Pearson: Many are wondering, who is the other Leroy behind the camera? How did you both meet?

Leroy & Leroy: We have been friends since high school. I’m not exactly sure how we met but being a grade apart in the same school made it pretty much inevitable. After Leroy behind the camera moved back to Moose Jaw over 10 years ago we re-connected and in 2017 started making videos together.

Kyla Pearson: You recently hit the road and “found things to do” in Alberta. What has that trip been like? Have you had the chance to connect with fans out west?

Leroy & Leroy: The trip was really amazing. It was incredible to be out filming and hear people yelling “LEROY” at us from their vehicles as they drove past. We weren’t sure what to expect but the response was extremely welcoming. We didn’t have any formal meetup or anything like that but did get a chance to talk with a lot of people who went out of their way to come over and say hi – we really appreciated that!

Kyla Pearson: What has been your favourite video you’ve created? What’s one place you’ve visited thus far that has been a highlight for you both?

Leroy Behind the Camera: Honestly, our video “Leroy and Leroy’s guide to Moose Jaw Part 2” is probably my favourite. I was a big “Super Dave” fan growing up and we got to use one of his classic jokes about saying you are going to do something, then something happens and you never end up doing it. As far as favourite places, hmmmmmm, probably Cypress Hills National Park in Saskatchewan. The beauty in the park is incredible and we got to make some of our funniest videos to date there. They have a real sign that says max 16.5 km/h. So Leroy got a chance to tell everybody that if 17 km/h is a little too fast for you – then we have the place for you!

Leroy in Front of the Camera: So many answers to this! The Guide to Golf was a lot of fun, also our “Men Working” was another favourite. We have a new one that is coming soon that may take the top spot for me though!

Kyla Pearson: What is one place you’d love to visit next and why?

Leroy & Leroy: One of the great parts of the 2 of us working together on this is our different views. Leroy behind the camera wants to go to Winnipeg or Vancouver, Leroy in front wants to go to Ontario and Quebec. Ultimately we want to hit every province and travel south of the border.

FAN SUBMITTED QUESTION: “What do you both like to do in your spare time when you aren’t being so awesome and making these videos?”

Leroy & Leroy: Leroy Behind the Camera loves modern designer board games. He has over 100 of them and loves to host or attend game nights. Leroy in front of the camera likes creative work, but ultimately “free time” probably consists of being at kid’s sporting events – Or planning a mini getaway with his wife.

Kyla Pearson: Lastly, what is one goal you hope to achieve by the end of the year? What do you envision for the future of Leroy & Leroy?

Leroy & Leroy: There are several goals that we would like to achieve however most of them we don’t have any control over. What we do have control over is to continue to put out as much content as we can. Long term we just want to continue to grow!

Kyla Pearson: Is there anything you’d like to add?

Leroy & Leroy: Thank you to everybody for the support! It’s been more than we ever imagined and we really appreciate all the positive feedback.

“Hello Shitty Day” will make any bad day, well, a little less shitty.

On September 27th of last year, rising Texan singer-songwriter Jake Worthington released his single, “Hello Shitty Day,” featuring revered country star Miranda Lambert. Produced by award-winning producer Joey Moi and written by songwriting veterans Lambert, Jessie Jo Dillon, Dean Dillion and Jesse Frasure– the cheek & tongue track pokes fun at how a bad, no-good-weather day rolls in just when things are going well. Thinking Worthington’s voice would be the perfect fit for the country ballad, Lambert pitched him the song and helped bring this exciting collaboration to fruition.
